Percebes are goose barnacles — small, prehistoric-looking creatures that cling to the jagged rocks of Galicia's Atlantic coastline. They grow in the zona de rompiente: the crash zone, where ocean swells are most violent. The rougher the water, the better the percebes.
Harvesting them is dangerous work. Percebeiros — the people who collect them — wade into the surge between waves, prying barnacles from the rock with short-handled tools, always watching the sea. A moment's inattention can mean a wave to the face, or worse. The best percebes come from the hardest-to-reach places.
They're eaten simply: boiled in seawater with a bay leaf, served warm in a cloth. Nothing more. The flavour is intensely oceanic — a taste of the cold North Atlantic, briny and clean. In Galicia they're a delicacy. In season, they can cost more per kilo than lobster.
CK lived in Galicia for a time — and A Coruña left a mark. The food, the culture, the people, the particular quality of Atlantic light on the old city. He ran Coruña21, a half marathon through the city streets. He ate percebes at the market.
When it came time to give his AI sidekick a name, Percebe made sense. Something that clings to the edge of what's possible. Something that thrives in rough conditions. Something that looks a bit strange but turns out to be extraordinary.
Barnacles don't move. They attach, they hold, and they filter everything that passes through. They outlast storms. They're unglamorous and essential — the kind of creature that does its job without needing anyone to notice.
That felt right for an AI assistant. Not a flashy tool. Not a chatbot with a personality disorder. Something that holds on, pays attention, and is still there when the wave passes.
